"Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" stalk the stage this fall at Norristown's professional theatre; East Coast premier of the new Jeffrey Hatcher play

The timeless tale of the good doctor, Henry Jekyll, and his dark echo, Edward Hyde, opens just in time for Halloween on October 30 at the Centre Theater in Norristown.

In Victorian London, the respectable Doctor Henry Jekyll begins to display alarmingly erratic behavior. At the same time, a brutal figure haunts the city's streets, committing assault and murder under the cloak of fog and darkness. A terrified community and fearful Jekyll desperately try to learn the identity of the mysterious villain, discovering much more in the dark core of the human heart.

The play opens Thursday October 30 and runs through November 23, Fridays through Sundays at the Centre Theatre in the Montgomery County Cultural Center, 208 DeKalb Street Norristown. Showtimes are at 8 p.m. with Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. Tickets are $20. Call 610-279-1013 for information, or visit the web at www.ironagetheatre.org Tickets can be purchased at www.ticketleap.com

"Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" based on the classic Robert Louis Stevenson novelette, is a terrifying and probing exploration of the disintegration of the morals, mind and soul of the good Doctor. Stripping away the melodrama and romantic distractions of the novel, Hatcher develops a stylized and suspenseful new take on Stevenson's look at man's potential for savagery and the attraction of those who give into their darker side. This wildly theatrical play, it takes the audience on a startling journey into the depth of man's desires. In his search for peace and tranquility, Jekyll unleashes his inner demons and taking a leap from the original text, Hatchers lets those demons take the stage questioning the idea that there is anything fully good or evil.

Jeffrey Hatcher is one of America's most respected and produced playwrights. His most recent play "Compleat Female Stage Beauty" was a huge hit in New York and Philadelphia. He is an award winning author who has written for the movies and television. His plays "Scotland Road," "Three Viewings," and "Smash" have all been played to strong critical reviews.

The play stars a stellar cast of Iron Age veterans who bring the myriad of characters to life. Matthew McDonough plays Dr. Jekyll. McDonough was recently seen in "Fathers and Sons" at the Centre Theater and has starred in "The Cripple of Inishmaan," and "Shakesplotation!"

Kristi Good, David Fiebert, Adam Altman, Chuck Beishl, Steve McLean and Claire Golden-Drake make up the ensemble that swirls around the story. Good, a recent graduate of Villanova's Master's program is involved with Vanity House in Philadelphia. Aside from Iron Age, the cast has performed at Montgomery Theatre, Delaware Shakespeare Festival, Vagabond Acting Troupe and a variety of companies in the Philadelphia region.

According to Director John Doyle, the play perfectly suits Iron Age's style. "It is an ensemble driven play demanding a intensity and commitment from the actors who have to convincingly play multiple characters in a physically and emotionally intense, fast paced setting." Doyle said the style of the play is similar to Iron Age's previously well-received productions of "The Elephant Man," "Waiting for Godot" and "Terra Nova."

Working together, the Centre Theatre and Iron Age Theatre have been one of the most critically acclaimed companies working in the Philadelphia Area. They received a Barrymore Nomination for Best Lead Actor for "The Elephant Man" in 2005. Their 2003 show "Terra Nova" was nominated for a Barrymore Award for outstanding ensemble. The company also produced the critically acclaimed revivals of Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men," and presented the comic hits "A Skull In Connemara," and "The Cripple of Inishmaan," both by McDonagh. This year Iron Age returned to the Philadelphia Fringe festival with their premier of Steve Hatzai's "Waiting for the Ship from Delos" which played to full houses at the American Philosophical Society. Iron Age continues its season of premiers with Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

The Centre Theater is in the Montgomery County Cultural Center at 208 DeKalb Street in Norristown. It is easily reached from Routes 202, I-76, I-476 and Ridge Pike. There is plenty of free parking and the theatre is one block from Septa's Norristown Transit Center, R6 line. The new multi-story Septa parking garage for the Norristown Transit Center is now open and available for theatre parking.

The timeless tale about the good doctor, Henry Jekyll, and his dark echo, Edward Hyde, is brought to the stage in a fiercely theatrical new adaptation by Jeffrey Hatcher. Echoing the Barrymore nominated The Elephant Man and Waiting for Godot, Iron Age invigorates this inventively script. Stripping away the melodrama and romantic distractions of the novel, Hatcher develops a smart and suspenseful new take on Stevenson’s look at the evil that lurks in the hearts of men. Against the backdrop of Victorian London, the respectable Dr. Jekyll has begun to display alarmingly erratic behavior. At the same time, a brutal figure haunts the city’s streets, committing assault and murder under the cloak of darkness and dismal London fog. A terrified community tries to learn the secret of the deaths and discovers much more in the dark depths of the human heart. Opening for Halloween, Iron Age plays trick or treat with their audience.

Utilizing Lighting, a strong ensemble playing multiple roles and stylized acting, Dr. Jeykll and Mr. Hyde reinvents the legend of the transformed man and like Hyde himself, unleashes man's passions and rage onto the c\Centre Theatre stage.
